“Three types of cell competition and its roles in development, cancer, neurodegeneration and ageing”

During my talk I will argue that in multicellular animals there are three different and non-exclusive modes of cell competition: trophic competition for extracellular survival factors and resources (Moreno et al., Nature, 2002), competition through fitness fingerprints (Rhiner et al., Dev. Cell, 2010; Merino et al., Cell 2015; Levayer et al., Nature, 2015), and competition through mechanical stress (Levayer et al. Curr. Bio., 2016). I will discuss the differences and similarities between the three types and their role in ageing, development, neurodegeneration and cancer.
