Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to study gut microbiota colonization in Drosophila melanogaster. The position will be held in Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciências, Portugal, in the group of Luís Teixeira. The project is a follow-up of our recent discovery of gut colonizing bacteria in this model system (Pais et al. 2018). We have identified bacteria that can colonize and proliferate in the fly gut and stably associated in the absence of re-infection. This association seems mutually beneficial since the flies can disseminate the bacteria and these, in turn, promote Drosophila development and fertility. We will use the power of Drosophila genetics to study how, and to which extent, the host determines and regulates bacterial gut colonizers.

The post-doctoral fellow will be integrated in a dynamic research group interested in the interaction of Drosophila with Wolbachia, viruses and gut microbiota. Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência is located nearby Lisbon, Portugal, and is a leading research institute in Europe.
