Project leader in: Genetic engineering of crop pests
Salary Details: £37,890 - £41,438
Location: AL5 2JQ, Herts
Work Area: Science
Closing Date:04 Jan 2021
Overview Of Role
Rothamsted Research, an independent, world-leading International centre of excellence in agricultural related science, is seeking to appoint a talented mid-career Research Scientist to join the Insect Molecular Biology group within the Department of Biological Chemistry and Crop Protection, to project lead their genetic engineering programme.
You will be using state-of-the-art genome editing (CRISPR/Cas9 guided) technologies applied to chewing, sucking and storage insect pests, alongside more conventional transgenesis approaches in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster, to elucidate the roles of various gene targets of interest to the group.
The successful applicant will join a world class research team at Rothamsted and will have access to considerable in-house resources, including state of the art insect transgenesis laboratories, a DEFRA-approved insectary and glasshouses, and high-quality insect pest genomes. The post-holder will be expected to develop techniques in genetic transformation (transgenesis) and the analysis of transgenic insect strains. The post-holder will also play a key role in training and supervising other members of the Group, including research staff, technicians and students. The successful appointee will also be expected to assist with preparation of data and other reporting, including scientific publications.
To fill this exciting and challenging role, we are seeking a highly motivated mid-career researcher with a PhD in a biological science (cell biology, molecular biology, genetics). The ideal applicant would have experience in molecular biology and genetics in the genetically tractable model organism D. melanogaster. A background in bioinformatics with experience in the analysis of NGS data would also be advantageous. Excellent team working skills are also required. You must also be able to develop and apply new concepts and have a creative and driven approach to problem-solving.
The research conducted within the Insect Molecular Biology Group has impact on a global scale and we aim for strategic relevance via strong industrial links that underpin our research programme. The Rothamsted campus also provides opportunities for scientific outreach, enterprise and innovation.
This appointment is full-time for a fixed-term of 1 year in the first instance with a starting salary within the region of £37,890 to £41,438 per annum.
Closing Date: 04 Jan 2021
Interviews: 22 Jan 2021
