[Lfm] CoVID-19

Dear all,

Stefano, thank you for raising this important question. Several institutions, including the Crick, have reached out to Public Health England and are currently coordinating efforts to increase screening capacity. As you can imagine, the logistics are complex because volunteers will have to be trained by the already overworked diagnostics lab workers. I suggest you talk to people at your university to try and coordinate with them and PHE.

In the interest of keeping our email boxes under control, I suggest anyone who wants to discuss this further contact Stefano directly rather than using the LFM email address.

Take care,

Nic

Dear All
this email is not about flies but CoVID-19. I am writing to this forum because it is biggest forum I am in touch with.

I am wondering whether like me you are surprised about the decision of the government to do minimal testing for the virus : effectively they test only those that are ill and in hospital. WHO is urging all countries to do as much testing as possible.

The scientific community would have a very large capacity to carry out tests for the virus, and we could set up a system where members of the public could send swabs to be tested. Of course there are very major logistic steps to take but I think it is case of 'where there is a will there is a way’

Probably this kind of thinking is happening in other online groups (please point me to them if it is the case) but I was wondering what anybody thinks about this and whether they would be interested in forming a group prepared to take on such an initiative.

Regards
Stefano

Dear LFMers,

Sadly, we have taken the decision to cancel the March and April LFMs, which will probably not come as a surprise to all of you.

We will monitor the situation and will make a decision on the May and June meetings so that we can update you as soon as possible.

In the meantime, best wishes to all of you during these trying times!

Kind regards,

Nic, Isabel and Lucy
