[Lfm] CoVID-19

Hi All,

Below is an extract from an email I got requesting PCR volunteers from our labs on behalf of Public Health England. According to them, the sample swabs will already have been sterilised.

Best wishes to you all at this tricky time,

Alex

To that we would be grateful if you could consult with your group and provide a list of any who would wish to volunteer in this way. As you may imagine there are all sorts of uncertainties that remain to be resolved, but the current position is broadly as follows:

• The major current diagnostic bottleneck is PCR, therefore this call is for those competent in PCR methods – the NHS will be operating at clinical diagnostic standards and will of course provide training where needed

• Many Crick laboratories could probably manage some secondment of lab members to diagnostic labs, so for instance a lab member could volunteer for 2 sessions per week (2 x 4hr) and still keep other Crick lab work going

• There should not be major safety issues (virus should be sterilized prior to all procedures), but those that government has defined vulnerable groups should not volunteer (this would be in line with directions to those groups about home working)

• There are a number of NHS laboratories which have indicated a need, so once we have a list of those who are interested, we will work to provide the most straightforward and protected (travel and other) arrangements – including compensating any expenses which you might incur

I do have to say that I would not feel particularly safe with having the average fly pusher manipulating swabs of potentially infective material. I’d say this has to be done with all precautions by experts in Cat2 or 3 facilities.

What other researchers could do is to receive isolated RNA and run pcrs, not more than this.
I volunteer the Crick for that 😉. As far as King’s and UCL go, we are shutting down labs this week.

Dear All
this email is not about flies but CoVID-19. I am writing to this forum because it is biggest forum I am in touch with.

I am wondering whether like me you are surprised about the decision of the government to do minimal testing for the virus : effectively they test only those that are ill and in hospital. WHO is urging all countries to do as much testing as possible.

The scientific community would have a very large capacity to carry out tests for the virus, and we could set up a system where members of the public could send swabs to be tested. Of course there are very major logistic steps to take but I think it is case of 'where there is a will there is a way’

Probably this kind of thinking is happening in other online groups (please point me to them if it is the case) but I was wondering what anybody thinks about this and whether they would be interested in forming a group prepared to take on such an initiative.

Stefano

Dear LFMers,

Sadly, we have taken the decision to cancel the March and April LFMs, which will probably not come as a surprise to all of you.

We will monitor the situation and will make a decision on the May and June meetings so that we can update you as soon as possible.

In the meantime, best wishes to all of you during these trying times!

Kind regards,

Nic, Isabel and Lucy
