Hi James
we use plastic vials and bottles that we buy from SLS<https://www.scientificlabs.co.uk/>; after use we flash out the remaining food and brush away anything stuck on the side. We soak the the plasticware in 1% decon at least overnight then rinse carefully and re-use the vials and bottles. We do not sterilise them. For food we use dried food from Phillip Harris<https://www.philipharris.co.uk/product/biology/genetics-and-evolution/ready-mix-dried-food-for-drosophila-1kg/b8a03876> that we reconstitute directly in the vials or bottles. The food flashes out easily after use.
We wipe out any pen marking with alcohol. However we also use a tape that stays on well but also comes off and can actually be transferred (Useful for stocks)

All credits for for setting up this recycling system must go to my ex-PhD student Daniel Ranson who has now moved to a Bateman’s Lab
(Well done Dan !)

Regards
Stefano

Hi
I hope you are well? I am looking into decreasing the consumption of one use plasticware for flies in the lab, has or is anybody recycling their plastic or using glass, etc? If so, please can you email me how you do it/advice?
Thanks
James
