Hi All,

@Annick: Stefano has asked me to reply regarding the flushing of vials. I connected a tube with a relatively small lumen diameter to a regular lab tap to create high pressure. It took seconds to disturb the food and flush the vial. Some stubborn pupae remained but after soaking in a lab decontaminating solution for at least a few hours (previously used Distel and ChemGene), when rinsing the decon away, the remaining pupae was always removed. For heavily pupated bottles, a brief wash with a brush like this<https://www.google.com/search?q=small+bottle+brush&rlz=1C1GCEV_enGB956GB956&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=2ahUKEwixjPT64dP0AhULoXIEHWetAlcQ_AUoAnoECAEQBA&biw=1920&bih=937&dpr=1> when doing the initial vial flush helped. I have also used a small pressure water sprayer<https://www.google.com/search?q=water+pressure+sprayer&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwjzqsaE4tP0AhVCwYUKHduMA20Q2-cCegQIABAA&oq=water+pressure+sprayer&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQAzIFCAAQgAQyBggAEAgQHjIGCAAQCBAeMgYIABAIEB4yBggAEAgQHjIECAAQGDIECAAQGDIECAAQGDIECAAQGDoECAAQQzoICAAQgAQQsQM6CAgAELEDEIMBOgcIABCxAxBDOgYIABAFEB5QmwVY6Sdg6ShoAHAAeACAAUKIAcAJkgECMjOYAQCgAQGqAQtnd3Mtd2l6LWltZ8ABAQ&sclient=img&ei=NGqwYfPAJsKClwTbmY7oBg&bih=937&biw=1920&rlz=1C1GCEV_enGB956GB956> but honestly the pipe on a regular lab tap works just as well.

Cheers,
Dan

Some people who received this message don't often get email from annick at vivantx.com<mailto:annick at vivantx.com>. Learn why this is important<http://aka.ms/LearnAboutSenderIdentification>
Hi all,

@Stefano: just wondering, what do you use to flush out the food? Just a regular lab tap with tubing, or something with more force?

in response to Rita's question regarding re-usable labels:

we found electrical tape works very well - we ordered from here: https://www.gaffatape.com/<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gaffatape.com%2F&data=04%7C01%7CDaniel.ranson%40kcl.ac.uk%7C7806a71684bf4abe3c6808d9b8a81470%7C8370cf1416f34c16b83c724071654356%7C0%7C0%7C637743855358210035%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=syT9eW%2F3f1nZCtWsnW%2B2m%2Fd66UEbaNEk4WYa0e2Yw9o%3D&reserved=0>
I'm pasting our order details from a while ago:
2 x Electrical PVC Insulation Tape - Single Rolls (LEMPVC25G) at £1.04 = £2.07
2 x Electrical PVC Insulation Tape - Single Rolls (LEMPVC25R) at £1.04 = £2.07
2 x Electrical PVC Insulation Tape - Single Rolls (LEMPVC25Y) at £1.04 = £2.07
2 x Electrical PVC Insulation Tape - Single Rolls (LEMPVC19B) at £0.78 = £1.57
2 x Electrical PVC Insulation Tape - Single Rolls (LEMPVC19PK) at £0.78 = £1.57

We then print stock labels onto Avery labels L7656 (can be imported from an excel file).

After sticking the label onto a piece of electrical tape, we cover it with Scotch crystal clear tape.

They take a little time to make but last several years.

All the best,
Annick

If you have not seen it already, someone from an Argentina fly lab recently shared on Twitter her protocol for washing and reusing fly vials. [1]

Best,
