Research Fellow
Two fully funded posts are available in the Ratheesh lab aiming to investigate macrophage (hemocyte) migration during early Drosophila embryonic development. The successful applicant will join the laboratory of Dr Aparna Ratheesh in a new state-of-the-art Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building (IBRB), which is embedded in a vibrant research community on Gibbet Hill Campus including the Centre for Mechanochemical Cell Biology (CMCB), Warwick Medical School (WMS) and School of Life Science (SLS). The Ratheesh lab aims to understand how macrophages migrate in confined tissue environments. We use live cell imaging, quantitative image analysis tools and in vitro biophysical tools to decode basic principles of immune cell migration. We offer an outstanding environment for discovery science in one of the best universities in the UK.
Project 1 aims to understand how embryonic macrophages migrate in groups to infiltrate dense tissue environments. The project aims to identify mechanisms regulating cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesion during hemocyte migration.

The second post is funded by a BBSRC New Investigator Award to quantitatively describe the molecular force generating machineries which deform and propel the nucleus during embryonic hemocyte migration.

The candidate will be part of an international, well-resourced team of researchers with access to state-of-the-art equipment (including access to a range of light microscopy systems including confocal, multiphoton, lattice light sheet and optical tweezers) and a vibrant scientific community with excellent internal and external seminar programmes. The candidate will have the opportunity to form interdisciplinary collaborations and to present at international meetings and conferences.
The candidate will need to have an excellent first degree in a relevant subject area (biochemistry, biological sciences, biophysics etc.), have or expect shortly to complete a PhD or have equivalent research experience. A strong background in Molecular/Cell/Developmental Biology (or Biophysics) and experience in live imaging of cells/tissues in vivo or in cell culture is essential. Previous work with a model organism (especially Drosophila) and proficiency with biophysical methods are preferred, but not essential. A good knowledge in developing scripts and/or computational methods for quantitative image and data analysis (e.g., MATLAB, Python, ImageJ/Fiji) is highly desirable. Experience in working on an interdisciplinary scientific project is desirable, strong scientific interest and motivation are essential.
Regards,
Aparna
