Hi
A PhD studentship is available immediately in Prof Williams' lab at Royal Holloway - please, see the details below.
Cannabinoids medicines discovery using a Molecular Cell Biology approach in a model system
Non-psychotropic cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), provide medicinal effects in range of diseases including epilepsy and multiple sclerosis, with potential for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. Yet our understanding of the cell and molecular mechanisms underlying these effects remains limited. This industry-linked PhD will investigate molecular mechanisms of cannabinoids to develop innovative new medicines. The project will employ a tractable model system Dictyostelium, that has been used to improve our understanding of cannabinoid therapeutic mechanisms (DOI: 10.1111/bph.15351 and 10.1111/bph.14892). The research will involve a range of disciplines including molecular cell biology, biochemistry, pharmacology and neuroscience, and will ultimately include the translation of discoveries to relevant pre-clinical models. This will be a competitive program, and we are looking for experienced molecular cell biologists with a Masters degree or outstanding undergraduate grades, to join our vibrant research team at Royal Holloway University of London. Funding is open to UK applicants only, to start as soon as possible.
