Dear All
I am going to take advantage of the fact that Manolis has started this conversation on food to ask for some advice from the community (I hope it is OK)

We have always used Philip Harris Ready Mix food<https://www.philipharris.co.uk/product/biology/genetics-and-evolution/ready-mix-dried-food-for-drosophila-1kg/b8a03876> which we reconstitute with water (We do not have the luxury of having bottles and vials prepared for us so we prepare them as we need them)
We have never had any problems until a few months ago when we noticed some contaminations that got gradually worse (it seemed to coincide with an arrival from BDSC but I cannot prove it). We first tried to tackle that with Methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate (Nipagin) with no success , then we added propionic acid/ phosphoric acid mix <https://bdsc.indiana.edu/information/recipes/caltechfood.html> as described at BDSC. This seems to have solved the problem.

We do not add dried yeast because our research is on the effect of alcohol and we do not want the flies to be exposed to anything that ferments

I just wanted to know if anyone thinks that what we do is not ’standard’ and we should follow other procedures for feeding the flies.

Many thanks

(Manolis we have some spare flystuff vials : two boxes if it helps. This is a lot for us as we hand wash and reuse all our vials, for both economic and environmental reasons.)

Regards
Stefano

Dear All,

I know this mailing list is meant for other purposes, but we are in an emergency.

We seem to have huge issues with delivery of fly vials/flugs and fly food reagents. We used to be heavily dependent on SLS, but they haven’t delivered a single item in the past 6 months. We also seem to be unable to find any Brewer’s Yeast pot in this country from either MP biomedicals or Fisher.

Have you experienced similar issues? Have you found possible alternatives (esp. for yeast)?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Manolis
