Dear all,
This is not a fly-specific email but i thought several of you might be interested.
A few of us were at the British Society for Developmental Biology / British Society for Cell Biology / Genetics Society Joint Spring Meeting last week and it was fantastic. Some beautiful developmental biology (e.g.., Erik Clark, the PhD student that won the Beddington medal, *solved* some ancient conundrums concerning short versus long germ band insect segmentation, that shed light on similarities, namely on the use of a clock and wavefront model for most (short germ band) analogous to that employed in vertebrate segmentation), some exquisite cell biology (eg., Marvin Tanenbaum, visualising translation in cells), amazing plenaries of which I highlight the first (Bonnie Bassler in bacterial quorum sensing - a lot of fun and thought-provoking similarities with cancer cell community versus single cell behaviours) and the last (Xiaowei Zhuang, one of the developers of STORM super-resolution microscopy; in a talk that blew me away…. working towards visualising ALL RNA molecules in a cell… “only” at a few thousand now - need to gear up to 60k…)
If you like a “fix” of broad and excellent biology you may consider (re)visiting these meetings. Next year the BSDB celebrates its 70th Anniversary and will have a sole Spring meeting (i.e., without being joint with other societies); the year after it will have a Spring Meeting joint with the BSCB (new location TBA).
There are also smaller annual Autumn Meetings - either focused on a topic or joint with societies for Developmental Biology of other European countries (this year in Stockholm, joint with the Scandinavian Societies of DB - broad topic-wise). You can actually apply with a topic you’d like to organise a meeting on.
In fact, there is a movement to create a community of European Developmental Biologists (and if you’re a member of any of the national societies you would become automatically a member of the European Society) and to have a joint ESDB offset with the ISDB (I for international, often not in Europe).
I wished to remind you also that if you apply in advance you very likely can get a travel grant to cover the full registration of any of these meetings. But you need to be a BSDB member to apply to funding from the BSDB (makes sense… and the membership is very affordable). As a member you can also apply to funding to attend other meetings / workshops / courses so do consider it (and, again, remember to apply in advance).
The BSDB also offers (on a competitive basis) the Gurdon Summer studentships (with a leaning towards 2nd year BSc students, to encourage them towards a PhD in DB). It’s the host PI who has to be a BSDB member, not the student.
Another recent initiative is that the Postgraduate representatives are creating a website with info on career paths 9academic and non-academic) that we hope will be useful to many.
So, here I leave you with these opportunities and resources so you may remember to access them yourselves and also spread the word to others who may benefit. I’m sure the other societies offer valuable benefits also.

Enjoy!
